I was in Heaven, had to be heaven. One very beautiful place. Had the Swiss Alps right at our door, three US held ski resorts within a short distance and very friendly German people. I did not think there could be a place like this except in the old fairy tails. I learned to ski in the short time I was there. One of the guys had a VW Bus. We would all pile in and head for the ski resorts on our two or three days off. On one of our skiing trips, the bus lost power and could not make it up the snow packed hill. We ended up backing all the way back down the mountain. On one of our outings, we got drunk like always, sent one man back to the base to get our sleeping bags and more liquor. He had a American made truck so he followed the other two or three vehicles up the logging road to the top, just in case one lost power, he could hold or push it on up the road. We got drunker and slept on the mountain that night, I about froze. We had some good old GI fun also. There was this officer that came in, all set to change things. His mistake, not going to happen in heaven. He didn't pull but one or two inspections and that were enough to enact the adjustment squad. With a minor adjustment to his jeep one night from GI Green to Fairy Tail "Pink", he was soon on his way out. The next CO came in with a completely different attitude and soon he had nice little "Pink Panther" paw prints leading to his office and a sigh "Pink Panther" over his door. He had a good sense of humor and liked it. As all fairy tales have to end, so did mine. There was this place called Herzo that had so many 1049's out of there for Vietnam, the mission was hurting. We had to send some people to Herzo and I was one of the lucky names pulled out of the hat. My short-lived time at Bad Abling was over.
