Uncle Mike, Invisible (ASA) Soldier  (Opens new window)  The ASA was created Sept. 15, 1945. It grew out of the Army Signal Corps which, in turn, grew from various Army signal intelligence gathering agencies all the way back to WWI. The ASA reported both to the Armed Forces Security Agency and the National Security Agency, which had been formed by President Truman in 1952.

ASA personnel were trained at Fort Devens, Mass. Their duties were classified TOP SECRET and personnel deployed to Vietnam were assigned to units using the cover name Radio Research.
