MY PERSONAL ASA HISTORY

I enlisted in the Army on March 27, 1967, and was sworn in at the Boston Army Base along with several other future ASA'ers.  I recall Charlie Reardon, Steve Fowles specifically.  We were sent to Ft. Dix late that afternoon for basic training.  We hung around for about two weeks waiting for our cycle to begin.  When we finally started, there were about twenty of us in the company who had signed up for ASA.  Bruce Closser was in my training company along with the guys who had come in through Boston.  I also recall Herman Emmett being there.   I didn't run into Bruce again until Two Rock Ranch in 1968.  He was wearing Lieutenant bars by then.

I was sent to Ft Devens in May of that year for 98C20 training.  What I remember most is waiting for the security clearance while doing an extended tour of KP.  All I wanted from Army life at that time was to be the "outside man"!  A large ASA reserve unit was going through the training school at that time.  They constantly reminded us of our four year hitch vs. their six month vacation.

I had gone to school in Boston, and headed into the city at every opportunity.  My new army buddies and old college friends mixed well.

Most of my class was sent straight to Vietnam.  I lucked out,  because I had finished near the top of my class, and was sent to the 18th USASAFS in Bad Aibling Germany.  Of course, the Army in its infinite wisdom, made me an assitant mail clerk for three months.  Jerry Coover (Beaver Falls, PA?) and I made the most of it.  Does anyone remember Electricity Man? Germany was still a bargain even on PFC's pay.  After the mail duties, I was sent over to ops as a clerk (gee, all that training at Devens came in handy).  Three months of that, and I 1049ed for RVN.

I was sent to Ft. Meade for Target Orientation Training at NSA.  That was a neat experince to get that close to Big Daddy.  Washington D.C. was down the road, and all of us managed to get in a few times during our 6 week TDY.

Arrived in RVN in July '68, and was assigned to the 372nd RRC in Cu Chi. Ran into David Bayouth who had been in Bad Aibling.   Sent to ops for about a month, still working outside my MOS, and took over Mike Campisi's job at  the Division Tactical Operations Center when he left.  I remember some of the guys in the hooch:  Carl Ludy, Rusty Elvrum, Ed Gland, and Rick Jenkins.

In July of 1969, I finished my tour, and was assigned to Two Rock Ranch.  Arrived there in August, and promptly bought the Yellow Fiat.  Alot of new cars and bikes on the base.  There were a bunch of great guys there.  Ray Miller, Lou Horvath, Joel Hust, Charlie Reardon, Tim Setterlund, Joe McCarron, and Eric Masters.  The  parties after a swing shift were wild.  I remember gathering firewood, and heading to Bodega Bay for some serious beer drinking.   Lou Horvath and I got an apartment in Santa Rosa, and spent our last 3 months in the Army as MP's, because the base was closing down, and the mission had been transferred out.

I got an early out to go back to Boston University, and was discharged on 12/30/70.  I kept in touch with a few guys for a while, but lost contact with everyone over the years.  I've been in touch with Bruce Closser and Lou Horvath over the past few weeks, and hope to reconnect with many more of you over the coming months.

If this website does what it's supposed to, then a reunion should not be too far off!
