This is a picture taken during the going away party for SSG Gwen Conners, although everyone called him Hummer (he could TELL a tall tale, and was quick to do so). I don't remember everyone's name, but here goes:
Row 1 (seated): Mr. Kang (one of the Korean houseboys), Mike Barth, Hummer, Jack Keister with soon-to-be wife in his lap.
Next Row: Tuck Farrow sitting in Larry Schultz' lap; Korean soon-to-be wife of the guy behind her, whose name escapes me; Mr. Di'Agostino, Nancy, Russ, "Twiggy" (James Altwegg), a comely Korean girl, unknown, and on the end is Gene (who was at Ramusan prior to coming to FSK in 1975).
Back Row: Johnny (manager at Duffy's Tavern, where this was taken), Jim Early, "Pete" Peterson, Becky, Rich Carlson standing in front of "Mac" (Gary MacDonald), Ernie Cook.
Look at that shirt! I was such a snappy dresser in those days.
From left to right: Rich, Mike Barth, Dennis Preshoot, two other Korean linguists, Ernie Cook, and Larry Schultz. (I must have those names written down somewhere, but I can't remember now)
Rich Barber sent me this picture of a similar bunch of us out on the town. At first I thought it was the same night as the picture above it, but apparently we are all wearing different clothes. From left to right, we have Ernie Cook, myself, Larry Schultz, Rich Barber, Miss Kim (I know, I know, they all were named Miss Kim -- this Miss Kim, however, spoke surprisingly excellent English and was a lot of fun to talk to), and Mike McDonald. I heard from Rich in May 2000 out of the blue and was pleasantly surprised, to say the least. He retired from service and is now a deputy sheriff in Lubbock Texas. He and I and Mike McDonald were roommates for awhile, and he helped indoctrinate me into the ways of the Orient. He shaped a great deal of what I became while I was in Korea, so if you have a problem with that, take it up with Rich.
Jim Bone and Dick Minnick in front of the NCO club, wondering why I am taking their picture. (I was finishing off a roll of film and was taking pictures of just about anything, and its kind of ironic that this is one of the few pictures that actually came out okay).
Faron Hall and me on the town.
Don Adamson and myself drinking a couple of OB's. Damn, I sure looked stupid. Are all these pictures of me this geeky?
Frank Nealy, Ernie Cook, myself, Larry Schultz. By the way, since I started this website, I've heard from both Larry and Ernie. Bad pennies always turn up, that's what my mother always says. Of course, now we are going to have to argue over who the bad penny is. Frank was one of the last people to go through 98B (cryptanalyst) school, by the way.
One of my roommates, Rick Amundson, a local girl and me. He was a Chinese linguist and taught me some useful phrases.
These are guys I went through traffic analyst school with. About half of the class was assigned to Korea, the other half to Germany. (L-R) Scott Gorley, Mike Barth, Gary Hammond ("Mr. Harry"), local girl, Tim (?? I can't remember his name ??), John Conrad (a really good artist, by the way), and another local girl.
Myself, John Conrad and Scott Gorley out and about with the locals.
Tim (?), myself and Scott Gorley -- about our first week in the Land of the Morning Calm. Notice Scott Gorley and I both have on the nylon jackets that EVERYONE bought their first winter in Korea. Those suckers cost a couple of bucks and were warm as a mother's heart. Wish I had one today, although the stupid yellow knit cap I don't miss at all.
Tom Goins, who was one of my running buddies in 1975.
Rich Barber sent me the following two pictures:
The one above is Michelle (can't remember the last name), one of the first WAC's to show up at FSK. She was a TA in Black Dragon. Becky (can't remember the last name) is featured in the picture below, along with a bunch of other people. They both came over in 1974 from Vint Hill Farms.
I can't remember all the names for these people, and a few of them I don't even know (looks like a bunch of day beggars, but we all have a cross to bear), but I'll give it a shot. Starting from left to right:
Don't know but he sure looks familiar; Orville Groves; (standing) don't remember but I think he was a TA; (sitting and looking intensely at Becky) Gwen "Hummer" Connors; Mister Di'Agostino, the warrant officer in charge of Black Dragon; I don't know the people at the back table; Becky something-or-other, who was a TA in Black Dragon; can't really tell for certain, but he looks kind of familiar.Well, that wasn't very impressive at all, was it? The faces are familiar, but I didn't exactly run the ville with this crowd -- I just worked with them. This looks like a sunny afternoon at Duffy's Tavern, probably some kind of party by the look of the Hamm's and Olympia beer cans.
This was the first picture taken of me in Korea, snapped about the third day I had been in country. I had just gotten my pass so that I could leave Camp Humphreys and explore the village, and I have been in the village for all of one and a half hours. I was eighteen going on thirteen. I would end up spending a hell of a lot more time (and money) there than I care to recall, but at this stage of the game, it was all BRAND-SPANKIN'-NEW and I had just begun to assimilate the entire scope of things. God, was I innocent at that stage (about 30 minutes later, I was thoroughly debauched, but at this stage of the game I was still pretty innocent).
