THE MSgt ROY P. BENAVIDEZ PARK DEDICATION
After Action Report

On June 16, 2001 the City of Colorado Springs dedicated a beautiful little park to the memory of (and in honor of) Msgt. Roy A. Benavidez. One of your Board members was present for the ceremony along with David Rogers - a long time member of this organization and former ASA and NSA'er.

The ceremony was tastefully done with the Presentation of Colors by an Honor Guard of Special Forces soldiers from the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) out of Fort Carson. Also participating in the ceremony was the United States Air Force Band of the Rockies, which played patriotic military ditties and closed the ceremony with the Army song of "Caissons".

Numerous politicians were there to extol the virtues of Msgt. Benavidez who had a close relationship with the City of Colorado Springs and Colorado as well. These same politicians were also very generous in their praise of the military and it's personnel.

The main speaker was Colonel (now Brigadier General) Richard Mills who was the Commander of the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne).

The Guest of Honor was Noel Benavidez (son of Roy Benavidez) who spoke well of the military, ASA and Special Forces people. Noel told of how much his family appreciated this honor in Msgt. Benavides'' behalf.

As a surprise, your Board representative was called forward and the National Army Security Agency Association was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for it's donation of a metal park bench and plaque to the park.     (Your hard earned membership dues at work.)

I had the honor of then speaking and assured the people of Colorado Springs that in fact, it was we who were appreciative of the efforts of the Citizens of Colorado Springs and all of those who participated in the planning and dedication of the park and that we ought to be issuing all of them Certificates of Appreciation.

The final ribbon cutting ceremony was followed by refreshments and additional music.

Lon Mitchell, Board of Directors
